Cetarea (shellfish nurseries) route
Significant seafaring history that is still preserved in the rocks of the sea.
This pedestrian route begins 500 meters south of the port and continues north along the coast until almost the municipal limit with O Rosal. Along this 4.6 km route you can see the remains of 4 cetareas that are still preserved.
The cetareas are nurseries, old stone constructions on the intertidal margin to keep the shellfish alive for later sale. They date from the end of the s. XIX and were stopped being used in the 70s of the s. XX. A Guarda acquired an outstanding prestige by marketing high quality seafood and this recognition evolved into the appearance of an interesting gastronomy in which seafood products stand out.
