Jesuit order school

Jesuit order school

This building on the bank of the Miño marked the history of A Guarda more than 150 years ago thanks to the advances of its teachers.
In existing warehouses for commerce on the bank of the Miño, the Santiago Apostol School was founded by the Jesuits in 1875. It was the headquarters of the University School for eight years (1877-1885), the seed of the University of Deusto and the Comillas Seminary. Over the years, illustrious scientists such as Bastasar Merino or Eugenio Jalhay and renowned students passed through the classrooms. In 1916 the Order moved to Vigo and rented the facilities to the Portuguese Jesuits until they were expelled by the Second Republic. Another episode in the history of this old school was during the civil war that it functioned as a prison housing more than 3,000 prisoners.
