Fortress of Santa Cruz

This fortress, popularly known as a castle, was built around 1664 during the War of Independence between Spain and Portugal. During the 17th century, fortresses and defensive systems were built in the final stretch of the Miño. Its structure stands out with an irregular polygon plan and four bastions that protrude from the wall, where the well-carved stone sentry boxes are located. It has two pedestrian access doors. From Puerto Rico Street you access through Puerta de la Villa, which is the closest to the old town. The other access, Puerta de Socorro, surrounds the walled enclosure from Dominican Republic Street..
