Chapel of Santa Trega

Chapel of Santa Trega

Located at the top of the mountain, it has great devotion. Over the centuries it was visited by Franciscan monks or sailors from Povoa de Varzim.
The Santa Trega chapel is located on the San Francisco peak. Possibly the nun Egeria, after returning from her pilgrimage to the East, introduced devotion to the Saint among the hermits of Baixo Miño in the Early Middle Ages. The existence of a hermitage is documented as early as the 12th century, were the reforms and extensions of the 16th and 17th centuries, which give it its current appearance. Excavations carried out in 1994 revealed several Visigoth tombs that demonstrate the religiosity of the place. In front of the chapel is the San Francisco Cross dating from the 16th century that remembers the presence of the Franciscan monks in the region with the figure of Saint Francis of Asis on the reverse.
