San Marcos Square

San Marcos Square

For centuries there was a hospital for pilgrims in this protected square inside the walled area right next to the northernmost entrance.
This square is located between Colón and San Marcos streets and until the 19th century the Hospital of San Marcos was located, which provided help to the poor and pilgrims to Santiago arriving from Portugal. The date of its foundation is unknown but its existence in the 14th century is documented when it was rebuilt into a hospital and chapel building. Currently the Peace Court and other municipal offices are located.
