It was part of the old medieval wall and protected one of the entrances to the town at the top of the enclosure. In 1570 the current tower was built on top of another original one. It was rebuilt in 1730 because the previous one threatened ruin, and the bell was replaced on this date, while the current clock, donated by José Manuel Andreini, dates from 1924.
