This traditional street runs parallel to the pedestrian promenade but before its construction, the first line of houses faced directly onto the rocks of the port. The ground floor of these fishing houses were used for fishing. The seaside houses began to be painted to stop the salt from the sea by using the paint from their boats. According to the most romantic ones, they were painted in bright colors so that sailors could recognize their house when they came ashore. The name of the street comes because in A Guarda there were sea laborers, named, Malteses, who were sailors without their own boat and who worked for others.
